BEST PICTURE: American Hustle
It’s a tough choice between this and 12 Years a Slave, but the Academy seems to prefer a Forrest Gump to a Schindler’s List these days.
BEST DIRECTOR: Alfonso Cuaron
I couldn’t re-watch Gravity, even in the ritziest of home-theaters, but Cuaron’s immersive and terrifying 3D IMAX experience is unparalleled and deserves recognition.
BEST ACTOR: Mathew McConaughey (Dallas Buyers Club)
My money was on Bale until McConaughey stole the Screen Actors Guild award.
BEST ACTRESS: Cate Blanchett (Blue Jasmine)
As a whole, Allen’s latest was forgettable, but Blanchett really delivered. On the other hand, Adams deserves a win one of these days…
BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR: Jared Leto (Dallas Buyers Club)
All of the actors gave memorable performances, but the fearless Leto seems a clear choice.
BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS: Lupita Nyong’o (12 Years a Slave)
The controversial film may not receive the praise it deserves, but Nyong’o’s performance stands out from the more established nominees (and she’s got the SAG award to prove it).
